Pilot Krissy:

Hi there, my name is Kristen!

I was born in Ottawa, Canada but I haven't stayed in one place for too long. In fact, it was my love for travel that attracted me to the aviation industry, although not until later in life. As of my 30th birthday I had worked in and travelled to 48 countries, and that's when it occurred to me, "Why don't I see the world from the cockpit?!" After 10 years of working in marketing, journalism and communications, I decided to change professions and become a pilot.

In February, I moved to a small town in northern Canada called Grande Prairie to begin my private pilot license. At the same time, I worked 60 hours a week to fund my training. This was a challenging time, both mentally and physically, but incredibly worth it! In July, with my private license in hand, my boyfriend and I purchased a 1965 Mooney. Owning a plane has allowed us to explore so many places across Canada. We particularly love flying through the Rocky Mountains. Recently, we completed a 3500-nautical-mile cross country flight to Ottawa and back. It was very gratifying to be able to put all my training and studying into effect, and to see myself become a better pilot with every flight.

I am currently working on my commercial license and my night rating. I intend to finish my instrument and multi-engine rating within the next 6 months as well. Early next year, my boyfriend and I are planning a cross country flight to the United States. We'll continue to track south until we find the Caribbean!

While the aviation industry is experiencing uncertain times at the moment due to the pandemic, my goal is to continue flying and building flight time in the Mooney. I am always looking for new places to fly to. Naturally, my long-term goal is to work abroad for a large airline.

The pursuit towards becoming a pilot can be costly, challenging and time consuming, but I assure you it is the most gratifying accomplishment I've experienced to date. Keep your eyes fixed on the end goal, but work towards it in steps, day-by-day. You'll be there before you know it!

Happy Flying!
